So It Begins

Posted on Sat Oct 31st, 2020 @ 11:58pm by 1st Lieutenant Krios Akati

Mission: Bring on the Wrecking Machine
Location: Marine Hanger Deck

Krios was pacing back and forth, rehearsing the speech he had prepared. If there was one thing he hated more than anything, it was public speaking. Somehow he was more nervous explaining things to his men than to Captain Warrington. These marines had potential, he just had to find it. The door hissed open and a young crewman stepped in, "Lieutenant? They're ready for you."

The doors to the hanger bay hissed open. All was quiet as Krios began the walk from the doors to the stage that had been setup at the head of the column. Taking his place on stage, he looked over the marines, his marines. In one swift motion, they all came to attention and saluted their commanding officer. "As you were." Krios called out. Closing his eyes, he took a deep breath.

Opening his eyes to reveal 360 pairs of eyes staring back at him, Krios began. "As you are all a wear, things are not the way that they should be. I understand how you must feel. Being assigned to a back water post like this one, no real action to speak of. Everyone has an attitude when they talk to you. Nobody really wants you here." Pausing to let his words sink in, Krios began to walk the stage. "Well I don't give a damn what they have to say. We are here to do a job and that's what we're going to do." Being sure to make eye contact with as many of the men as he could, Krios was about to drop the bomb of this meeting.

"Now what you may not know is that I have evaluated every single person in this room. I've spent the last few weeks going over everything about you since you left basic and I have to say that with most of you I'm impressed." He let his words sink in before continuing. "The rest of you are going to have to impress me in the days and weeks to come. Now that being said, i know your last CO wasn't one to keep you guys trained up. You just got to do what you want when you want. Well, in my unit when I say jump you say yes sir. I'm going to be reorganizing the unit. You will be evaluated, and based on those evaluations you will be placed with a team."

Krios knew this next part was not going to go over well but it needed to be said. "I hope you guys like training, because I love it! There is no longer anything called the minimum requirements. There is only pass or fail. I will go over the new metrics with your team leads once I have chosen them. Now with this new training, you are going to be held to a higher standard." Krios could see the looks of disappointment and agitation on everyone's face. This was to be expected though.

"Throughout history, there have been specialized units that were charged with safeguarding the monarchs, keeping the peace, and never stopping in battle. These units were called The Guard. The most famous of those being Napoleon's Old Guard. I'm going to turn you into such a unit, even if I have to drag you kicking and screaming to get there." Krios stopped his pacing and stood, feet shoulder length apart, arms clasp behind his back in the middle of the stage. He took a long look at his men. they seemed ready, eager. "Remember these words: Be without fear in the face of your enemies. Be brave and upright. Speak the truth, even if it leads to your death. Safeguard the helpless. This is the oath of The Guard."
